Chapter 139, The Mission of Two

Chapter 139, The Mission of Two

Ruwei disagreed, but the little mouse didn't give up. It straightened up, gesturing in the air with its two front paws, and squeaked incessantly. After a while, Ruwei's expression finally softened a little.

He narrowed his eyes slightly, a barely perceptible hint of hesitation flashing within them. After a moment, he pointed a finger at Liang Dong and said coldly, "The cook can leave, but he can't."

Liang Dong's heart skipped a beat, but when he heard that Lin Yue could return safely, he breathed a sigh of relief, and his tense expression became even more respectful.

Just as he was about to say something, he heard Ruwei continue to say to the little mouse, "No, now whenever I see him, I think of my snow crystal wood that was cut down; whenever I think of the snow crystal wood, I can't help but feel angry; and once I feel angry, I can't do anything."

As Lu Wei finished speaking, a look of annoyance appeared on his face: "But I haven't finished the doghouse that Mi Li asked me to make for her. This matter can't be delayed. Little thief, since you can cut down trees, you must be able to make houses too. You, go and make that doghouse in the yard for me."

Although the logic that cutting down trees leads to building houses is utter nonsense, Liang Dong was still both surprised and delighted upon hearing the task prompt. He hurriedly agreed and left.

Ruwei truly lived up to his reputation as a master architect; the courtyard was fully equipped with all sorts of tools, neatly arranged. Even the wood was of the highest quality, hard and with clear grain—clearly valuable. But the quantity… was he deliberately making things difficult for himself?

Liang Dong frowned slightly, pondering how to make the best use of the limited materials. After a moment, he carefully examined the style of Master Lu Wei's house, and with a rough plan in mind, he picked up the axe beside him and chopped hard at a log.

With a "crack," the log split open, sending sawdust flying. Liang Dong began his work methodically. Before he knew it, it was time for Lin Yue to call them for dinner.

Just then, Liang Dong was chopping at a new log when he heard Lin Yue's shout. He instinctively looked up to respond. In that two seconds of hesitation, the log he had just split in two lost its support and slammed straight down toward his toes.

"Hiss..." Liang Dong couldn't help but let out a muffled groan, his face contorting as he clutched his foot.

The excruciating pain contorted his facial features, and after a few seconds of silent groans, he caught sight of Lu Wei carrying the little mouse out. He quickly composed himself, forced himself to endure the pain, and limped after him.

After the group finished their meal, Lin Yue received the system notification as she had hoped: [Successfully completed Master Lu Wei's cooking task. Master Lu Wei is very satisfied with the taste of the food; his favorability has increased by 10 points. Current favorability is -10.]

Lin Yue: "..."

This short master is quite vengeful. It turns out that all he did was help Uncle Dong escape once, and his favorability rating dropped by 20 points? He's worked so hard preparing a whole table of dishes, and only managed to get 10 points back.

However, even just regaining 10 points of goodwill is quite effective. At this moment, Master Lu Wei, with his round belly, was slowly digesting his food in the courtyard. When he looked at Lin Yue, his eyes and voice softened.

"Chef," Master Lu Wei called out in Lin Yue's direction, "your cooking is indeed very good. I'd like to invite Mi Li over for a meal tonight. Could you cook another meal for me? Don't worry, I won't let you cook for free. I'll let you go after she finishes eating!"

As soon as he finished speaking, the system notification popped up cheerfully again; this was Master Lu Wei's second task.

Lin Yue had already seen the message on Liang Dong's bracelet and knew that if Master Lu Wei didn't agree, she and Liang Dong wouldn't be able to leave. Therefore, without hesitation, she readily nodded and agreed: "No problem, Master Lu Wei, rest assured, I will definitely try my best to make sure Miss Mi Li is satisfied!"

Master Lu Wei nodded in satisfaction, then rubbed his eyes, picked up the little mouse, and slowly walked towards the bedroom.

"Yawn..." He was feeling sleepy after eating, so he should take a nap.

Seeing Master Lu Wei leave, Lin Yue looked in Liang Dong's direction, a hint of worry in her eyes, and hesitated before speaking: "Uncle Dong..."

Master Lu Wei just told her to go back, but it's still uncertain what will happen to Liang Dong.

Liang Dong seemed to have seen through Lin Yue's thoughts. He smiled reassuringly at Lin Yue, his smile appearing quite magnanimous: "Thanks to you, Xiao Yue, the situation is much better than we originally thought."

If the two of them are still hiding in the cave, and find that they can't leave when the designated return time arrives, then they will truly be "crying to heaven and earth in vain." This island is someone else's territory, and it's only a matter of time before they are found. They may not even be alive by then.

Lin Yue agreed with Liang Dong's point. At least the little mouse had served its purpose; as for what happened next, it would depend on the two of them working on it themselves.

With that in mind, the two briefly discussed their next plans and then quickly went back to their respective tasks.

Lin Yue needs to find a way to make more delicious food. As for Liang Dong, his doghouse is not yet finished.

Fortunately, Liang Dong had experience building treehouses for his son, and he usually made various handicrafts such as lounge chairs and rocking horses on the platform when he had nothing to do. So he was quite proficient in using all of Lu Wei's tools.

Time slipped away quietly in the midst of the hustle and bustle, and before long it was evening. The afterglow of the setting sun spilled into the yard, bathing everything in a golden glow. The kitchen was already wafting with the aroma of food, while in the yard, a doghouse that looked quite decent was gradually taking shape.

To avoid stylistically inconsistencies with Ruwei's house, Liang Dong did not use the traditional method of piecing together wooden planks. Instead, he split all the logs in half, with the flat surfaces facing inwards and the curved surfaces facing outwards, creating a solid wood doghouse that looks similar to a large house but actually has a more spacious interior.

Liang Dong was worried that Miss Mi Li wouldn't like an ordinary house, so he specially made a pair of cute dog ears and a lifelike dog tail on the doghouse, making the whole house look quite interesting.

When Mi Li arrived carrying her puppy in the sunset, Lin Yue and Liang Dong were already following behind Master Lu Wei, standing on the main road far away from the house to greet him with big smiles.

Both of them wore smiles, but there was a hint of trepidation and anticipation mixed in. Master Lu Wei, on the other hand, was simply overjoyed. His mouth was stretched so wide it almost reached his ears, and his eyes sparkled with excitement as he glanced in the direction from which Mi Li had come from.
