Chapter 171 - 157: Husband and Wife
On the way back to Sutton Gardens, Luna Langley rested in Silas Lockwood’s arms the entire way.
The heat from their bodies pressed together drew out the subtle, sweet fragrance from her skin, making it grow more and more distinct.
Silas Lockwood was on pins and needles.
Unable to pinpoint the source of his restlessness, he just hoped the car would get to Sutton Gardens faster.
Half an hour later, Conrad Beckett finally pulled the car up to the house.
"President Lockwood, we’ve arrived."
Silas Lockwood got out of the car first, then carried Luna Langley out from the back seat.
It was late, and Aunt Sinclair, the housekeeper at Sutton Gardens, was already asleep. Silas Lockwood didn’t wake her, carrying Luna Langley straight up to the second-floor bedroom.
Although this was their "marital bedroom," it was the first time Silas Lockwood had ever stepped inside.
Luna Langley had been living here for a month, and her scent seemed to have permeated every corner of the room. Silas Lockwood felt the unease of an intruder stepping onto foreign territory.
He placed Luna Langley on the bed and took off her coat and shoes. Just as he was about to pull the blanket over her, he heard her cry out loudly in her sleep, "Don’t!"
’Don’t what?’
Before Silas Lockwood could react, Luna Langley suddenly rolled over in bed, turning her back to him.
She was asleep, but not peacefully.
Her slender figure, lying on the large double bed, looked like a lone boat adrift on a vast sea.
Silas Lockwood stood by the bed for a moment, then pulled the blanket over her and left the room.
The next day, Luna Langley was woken by her daily alarm to a splitting headache.
She only remembered getting drunk at a business dinner last night; everything after that was a complete blank. Ever since she became president of the Langley Group, engagements like this were a frequent occurrence. She hated drinking, but her hands were tied.
Luna Langley got up to wash up. As she got out of bed, she saw her coat and shoes placed neatly at the foot of the bed.
Realizing something was off, she immediately called her assistant, Aki.
"President Langley."
"Who brought me home last night?"
"It was President Lockwood."
"Which President Lockwood?"
"President Langley, are you still drunk? Of course, it was your husband, President Lockwood."
’Husband.’
The word still felt foreign to Luna Langley.
"President Lockwood happened to be at a dinner in the private room next door. He saw you were drunk, so he brought you home on his way."
Luna Langley glanced again at the clothes and shoes at the foot of her bed. ’Don’t tell me... Silas Lockwood was the one who took them off for me?’
While she was still hesitating, she heard Aki add with a laugh, "President Lockwood carried you to the car—bridal style!"
Luna Langley’s face instantly grew hot.
"I’m hanging up."
She hung up the phone and went into the bathroom to shower and wash her hair. When she was all dressed and ready, she came downstairs to see Silas Lockwood sitting at the table eating breakfast.
He wore a light-colored suit, exuding an air of refined elegance. The way he ate his salad was like a scene from a movie.
Luna Langley paused on the stairs, unable to resist looking at him for a few extra seconds.
They had been married for a month, but the fact that Silas Lockwood was her husband still felt like an impossible dream.
"What are you doing just standing there?" Silas Lockwood, who had caught sight of Luna Langley out of the corner of his eye, turned to look at her.
Luna Langley collected herself and walked over to him.
"My assistant told me you brought me home last night. Thank you."
"You’re welcome." Silas Lockwood stood and pulled out a chair for her. "I asked Aunt Sinclair to make you some soup to help with the hangover. Have some."
"Thank you."
She was thanking him for his chivalry, as well as his thoughtfulness.
Silas Lockwood suddenly smiled. "How many times are you going to thank me?"
At his words, Luna Langley realized she was indeed being too formal. They were a married couple now.
She sat down and drank the soup Aunt Sinclair had prepared. Her head was still throbbing, and she didn’t have any appetite for breakfast.
"I’m heading to the office," she told Silas Lockwood. "I have a morning meeting."
"You’re not eating breakfast?"
"I can’t."
Silas Lockwood didn’t press the issue. He watched her retreating figure—so slender she looked as though a strong gust of wind could blow her away, yet she carried the weight of an entire conglomerate on her shoulders.
"Wait." Silas Lockwood hurried after her.
Luna Langley turned back to look at him. "Is there something else?"
"I heard from Aunt Sinclair you’re going back to the Langley family home tonight?"
"Yes."
"Do you want me to go with you?"
