Chapter 26: Educated Youth of the Era (Part 8)
Liu Yuxi had been a doctor his whole life in his previous life, and he had studied both traditional Chinese and Western medicine, so his treatment of minor ailments and some chronic diseases in the village was very effective.
With current medical conditions, except for cardiovascular and neurological diseases that are difficult to treat, Liu Yuxi's other illnesses can be cured almost instantly.
Originally, the villagers thought that Liu Yuxi was only good at treating fever and colds, frozen shoulder, cervical spondylosis, lumbar muscle strain, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Later, a young woman in the village had a difficult labor due to breech presentation. She was exhausted and showing signs of severe bleeding. The midwife was at her wit's end, so she asked her family to find an oxcart to take her to the hospital. However, the man of the house saw that his wife was almost dead and was afraid that she wouldn't make it to the hospital. So, as a last resort, he went to Liu Yuxi.
Liu Yuxi entered the delivery room with her medicine box and immediately inserted needles into the mother's body. Then she took out ginseng slices that she had collected and processed herself and put them in the mother's mouth. While waiting for the mother to wake up, Liu Yuxi turned the baby into the correct position. After the mother regained consciousness, under Liu Yuxi's guidance, she gave birth to a 6-pound son in less than ten minutes.
The baby was handed over to the midwife, and Liu Yuxi took care of the new mother. Later, Liu Yuxi prescribed medicine for the new mother to regulate her body, and she stayed in confinement for a whole month. The new mother looked even healthier than before she was pregnant.
The family of the new mother were so excited that they insisted that Liu Yuxi name the child. Liu Yuxi thought to herself that if she hadn't traveled to this world and there were no doctors in the village, the child might not have survived in the original world. So she named the child Guo Xinsheng, hoping that he would have a new and wonderful life.
Later, she told everyone in the village that pregnant women should come to her to check the baby's position during pregnancy and have regular checkups to prevent malposition during delivery. Of course, she would wait by the side when a pregnant woman gave birth to prevent any accidents from happening.
Over time, the villagers discovered that Liu Yuxi could treat almost any illness. Even for those she couldn't treat, she would offer treatment advice. This made the villagers less hesitant to seek medical help, and they would go to Liu Yuxi for checkups as soon as they felt unwell to prevent minor illnesses from becoming major ones.
The autumn harvest arrived amidst a flurry of activity. No matter where you are, the autumn harvest is exhausting, especially in Northeast China. Because of the vast land and sparse population, each village has a very large area of cultivated land, which means the harvest season is very long. Liu Yuxi's team spent nearly a month harvesting and storing all the rice, corn, and soybeans. Everyone was exhausted and their skin was peeling off, and they were several shades darker from the sun.
But seeing the grain stored away, everyone wore a joyful smile. After the brigade delivered the grain to the state, it was time to distribute it. This was the happiest time of the year; after a year of hard work, everyone looked forward to this day of distributing grain and money.
Liu Yuxi had almost full work points that year, enough for her to eat by herself, but she still spent money to buy some refined grains from the brigade, namely rice and fine cornmeal (the kind without the cob).
She packed a large parcel containing some rice and cornmeal, along with dried chicken, dried rabbit, cured meat, walnuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts, and dried mushrooms that she had traded with a fellow villager, and sent it home. After all, ever since she went to the countryside, her family had been sending her letters, money, and supplies every month.
She had been writing home regularly, mostly about interesting things happening in the countryside. She didn't mention being a barefoot doctor in the village, since her family knew she hadn't studied medicine. She was sending so many things back home because of the autumn harvest, just to reassure her family that she was doing well.
When Liu Yuxi's family received the package, they were a little relieved about Liu Yuxi's life in the countryside. After all, if you don't have good relationships with people, you certainly can't get so many things even if you have money, which means that Liu Yuxi is doing quite well in the countryside.
After the autumn harvest, the villagers would organize hunting trips to the deep mountains. After all, the pigs raised in the village had to be handed over to the purchasing station, and only two could be kept. After a year of hard work and a long winter, these two pigs were simply not enough. Living in the mountains, the villagers naturally had their own ideas, so every year after the autumn harvest, the brigade leader would organize the young and strong men to go hunting in the deep mountains.
As for the women and the elderly and children who stayed behind, they went into the mountains to pick wild fruits and mushrooms and collect firewood. Liu Yuxi prepared a lot of deworming medicine, hemostatic medicine and some animal-attracting medicine that she made herself for them.
Later, Liu Yuxi was like a busy little squirrel, busy in the mountains every day. When there were people around, she would only secretly transfer some of the things she had picked into her space, doing so in a very subtle way. When she was alone on the edge of the deep mountains, she would freely transfer things into her space, whether it was food or firewood. Anyway, she would be staying in the countryside for so many years, and whatever she collected would be useful.
Two days later, the hunting party returned, and the captain's youngest son was carried directly back to the clinic. It turned out that the hunting party had found a water source deep in the mountains and scattered some animal-attracting drugs given to them by Liu Yuxi next to the water source. In less than an hour, they attracted more than a dozen wild boars, as well as several wild sheep and deer. The group opened fire from their ambush position and easily killed most of the prey, while the rest were frightened away by the gunfire.
The brigade leader's youngest son, having never been into the mountains before, lacked experience. While preparing the game, he didn't check if the wild boar was truly dead before attempting to tie it up. As a result, a boar that wasn't quite dead nudged his leg, breaking it! What an unlucky kid.
The only injured young man in the entire group was this one. The others carried seven wild boars, three sheep, and two deer to the brigade headquarters, preparing to divide the meat and eat a feast of slaughtered pig. Liu Yuxi helped the young man with bone setting and bandaging at the clinic. After treating the young man's leg, she also came to the brigade headquarters, since opportunities to eat meat openly were still too rare.
She also wanted to get more venison. In her future life, the venison available was all from farms, and these two deer were both males, so she needed to process their antlers. As for the deer penis, she took it back and soaked it in medicinal wine. After it was soaked, she handed it over to the brigade leader to process. She was still a minor girl; who would dare to ask her for deer penis wine!
Afterwards, the village organized two more trips into the mountains. With the help of the medicine provided by Liu Yuxi, they hunted quite a few more animals before stopping, as they had to consider sustainable development. For the rest of the time, the men gathered firewood and repaired the roof, while the women collected mountain products, continuing until the first heavy snow fell.
